“Living Material”, Bed sheets, window curtains, lace, clothing, boxer shorts, towels, condoms, tablecloths, pantyhose, 7’ x 7’, 2014, $2000
Statement:
Tablecloths, bed sheets, clothing, towels and curtains are all materials that we encounter everyday. These items are woven together with underwear, pantyhose and condoms to take the form of a rag rug in “Living Material.” This piece positions the intimate fabrics surrounding us on an equal plane with the public fabrics we use to decorate our homes. It becomes a time capsule, an heirloom, and a monument for the necessity of understanding intimate objects not as objects of taboo, but objects of an intimacy we are all a part of.
