“Artemister”, Slate laboratory drying rack, glass test tubes, condoms, 32″x 32″x 7.5″, 2015, $3500
Statement:
“After experimenting in the studio and arriving at the image of a condom draped over a glass test tube as the basic building block for my response to Preservatif, the acquisition of an old slate drying rack from a renovated chemistry lab provided the final inspiration. Its many proudly-angled prongs suggested a correspondent male to the multi-breasted Artemis, mother goddess of Ephesus: Artemister.”

John Salvest’s work has been presented in solo and group shows throughout the United States, including one-person exhibitions at Phoenix Art Museum; New Museum of Contemporary Art, New York; Grand Arts, Kansas City; Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; Cheekwood Museum of Art, Nashville; Art Museum at the University of Memphis; Brooks Museum of Art, Memphis; Arkansas Arts Center, Little Rock; Rudolph Blume Fine Art, Houston and Morgan Lehman Gallery, New York. His work has been reviewed and featured in publications such as Art in America, The New York Times, The Village Voice, Sculpture, Art Papers and NUMBER. Salvest received a B.A. in English from Duke University and an M.A. in English literature and an M.F.A. in sculpture from the University of Iowa. He resides in Jonesboro, AR, where he is Professor of Art at Arkansas State University.
